Netherlands football legend Johan Cruyff thinks Jose Mourinho would be a better coach if he had played at the highest level as a footballer himself.

The Portuguese Jose Mourinho is considered to be one of the best coaches in the history of football by some after he enjoyed success with Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan and now Real Madrid, but Johan Cruyff  still questions his abilities.

“He is a very good coach, but he has never played the game himself. He misses something and that shows,” Cruyff told Cadena COPE.

“Those of us who have played notice certain details. That does not mean that he is not a good coach, though.

“He has a lot of good players and he could get more out of some of them. But you have to give them a certain freedom. (Luka) Modric for example is a great player, but it all depends on how you use him.”

  • Cruyff mst stop wth his baseless jealous comments. he must go back n ask himself how Johan Neskeens failed at Sundowns. Nw in tht way, he’ll be doing justice. He says Mourinho is gud coach ‘but’. If he gud thn why do u use words like ‘BUT’, ag man get over it over wth. Mourninho is a gud coach, ths widely agreed. We dnt an individual’s statement 2 change our mindset abt mourinho.

    • If you saw the Barcelona this guy (cruyff) coached and has the style of football created then still successfully existing at the club today, you would understand where this guy is coming from.

I wonder why u are making this comment, Maradona played and won cups, He coached and never won a single cup, does Cruyff play more than Diego?
Mourinho is simply the best, Jealousy will kill them, The whole Africa Loves Mourinho

Its true Mourinho is good but don’t you think he would have been better if had the on pitch experience?

  • Thabiso, please STOP the blind loyalty thing I see in your comment; not necessary. This is not just about the hype of the game, Cruyff is speaking reality, maybe not as widely popular as Mourinho, he is nonetheless a good coach himself and was a great footballer. You may read Brian’s comment. Mourinho is a “very good coach” he said, BUT would have been better had he played the game himself. Think about that a little sir. Have a great day.

COACHING A TEAM IS NOT LIKE PLAYING FOOTBALL.YOU CAN BE A GOOD FOOTBALLER BUT NOT A GOOD COACH .THE MAIN IMPORTANCE IN COACHING IS THE GOOD VISION.AND PRACTISE THE BEST DEFENSE.THAT ALWAYS BEEN THE TACTIC OF JOSE MOURINHO. HE STUDY HIS RIVAL TO PRACTISE THE BEST TEAM……

There is some merit to what Cruyff is saying. How do you teach something very well if you haven’t experienced before?

  • Even Diego Maradona who was a great player in the history of the game, Couldn’t even do good as a coach. Jose Mourinho is a born coach and a manager, even his father Félix Mourinho was a coach and Jose Mourinho at the age of 15yrs used to set up game plans for his father Felix Mourinho which eventually work for his dad then as a manager. Playing the game or not doesn’t make any difference. He has all the qualities as a coach, so please Cruyff or Cry whatever your name is let Jose be.
