The Bulgarian was due to travel to Florence on Wednesday morning after United had accepted a £4 million bid from Fiorentina, however, after hearing that Juventus were able to offer him a better salary package, the 31-year-old failed to board his flight.

Fiorentina, who finished 13th in Serie A last season, have offered Berbatov £1.4m per year, while the Italian champions have tempted the striker with a £2.1m-a-year wage packet.

Berbatov, who moved to United for a club-record fee of £30.75m in 2008, finished top goalscorer in the Premier League two seasons ago but fell out of favour at Old Trafford last term, making only five league starts.

He has one year remaining on his current deal and is yet to have made an appearance for the side so far this season.
