Alexander Kerzhakov scored the only goal to keep Russia top of Group F.

Alexander Kerzhakov scored an early goal in the 6th minute to give Russia their third consecutive win of their World Cup qualifying campaign.

Kerzhakov broke clear on goal in the sixth minute following some quick one-touch passing featuring his team-mates Viktor Faizulin and Roman Shirokov. It was his third goal in the three qualifiers so far.

However it was Russia’s only shot on goal in the first half, while Portugal dominated possession for the rest of the match but were unable to score.

”It was a tough match, but today I’ve seen that team on the pitch which I saw at practice all this week,” Russia coach Fabio Capello said. ”The players played with huge desire and commitment.”

Russia next hosts Azerbaijan while Portugal will be at home against Northern Ireland on Tuesday. Israel and Luxemburg are also in the group.
