Arsenal and Spurs fight separate battles for the final Champions league

With newly crowned FA cup champions Wigan losing to Arsenal in midweek, Wigan’s fate was sealed as they take the final relegation spot, joining Queens Park Rangers and Reading as the teams dropping to the second-tier of English football. With the championship and relegation battles concluded, other than pride and premiership positions, there is only the final champions league spot left to play for. North London rivals Tottenham and Arsenal will fight it out to see who will clinch the final spot. Arsenal are in poll position and need only to win to secure their place.

The Gunners travel north to play Newcastle, while Spurs host fellow northerners Sunderland. Newcastle are safe from the drop but manager Alan Pardew’s job is under threat and he needs a win or at worse a convincing performance to keep his job. Spurs opposition Sunderland are also in need of a win, with new manager Paolo di Canio wanting to close out there season on a winning note. Spurs on the other hand do not control their fate.

Failure for both teams will be disappointing for different reasons. Arsenal have been champions league regulars having participated in all 16 years of Arsene Wenger’s reign. In truth, if Arsenal secure 4th place, it will be a tremendous achievement. As for large spells of this campaign the Gunners were playing to the point where boss Arsene Wenger was a favorite to be sacked as they were in the midst of having their worse season in Wenger’s Reign. It they are to secure 4th place it will truly be a magnificent turn around.

For their rivals Spurs, if they fail to achieve it will be a drastic disappointment. After finishing 4th last year, but getting bumped out by Chelsea on a technicality, and after being dominant over both Arsenal and Chelsea for the majority of the season, to come up short in the last 6 weeks will be a crushing blow. For Spurs to succeed it going to take some heroics from player of the year Gareth Bale to pull them through.
