De Gea’s form has been suspect in reason months, losing his spot to Anders Lindegaard, only to find Lindegaard hit a bad run and then win his spot back. In this weekends game against Tottenham away, United were 1-0 up with literally seconds of the game remaining and a poor fisted clearance, ended up with former Dallas Texan, Clint Dempsey scoring a last gasped effort.

In back to back games before this one, De Gea again was not able to tip the shots out of play, instead pushing the ball back into play to see a rebound goal scored on him in similar fashion, something a high level goal keeper should be able to deal with.

Former United right back, Gary Neville has also spoken out about the form of the 22-year-old Spaniard, saying he has to improve if he is to remain the Red’s number one. Claiming that although he has been slightly unfortunate, there are no excuses at Manchester United, especially as they have conceded more goals this term than they have in any outing as a top team.

He has to follow GK greats, Peter Schmeichel ( Who was present at the game with son Kasper ) and Edwin van der Sar, both Goal Keepers winning Champions league titles with the club, but with De Gea still being so young, there is definitely room for improvement, especially as a GK doesn’t really come into their prime until their early 30’s.

Neville added that the club’s standards are so high that an error cannot be ignored even when it occurs during an otherwise fine performance. Neville believes De Gea can improve, adding: “For the record, I think De Gea can be a great GK.
“He is young in an unforgiving environment and will physically mature in the next two years.”

Being a goal keeper isn’t easy, a forward or a midfielder can make 20 mistakes in a game, a bad pass or shot off target, and no one thinks twice, but one bad save and then all fingers are pointed. It is a tough position to play and anyone who plays it has to be made of stern stuff. Does De Gea have what it takes? Will he remain at the club or will Sir Alex Ferguson go in search of a quick fix and ship him out on loan? What are your thoughts?
