Why David Moyes? 446

Well so much for my predictions, but after overcoming the initial shock of Sir Alex Ferguson’s announcement to retire and then the even bigger kicker of the announcement that followed and his fellow Glaswegian taking the reigns, I have to come to terms with it and by doing so I will try and understand why?

Firstly, I can see similarities in the two men and looking deeper, I can force myself to see exactly why the Old Trafford outfit decided to go with David Moyes and why it actually makes sense.

The two men have a lot in common, both Scottish, both supporters of the labour party, both have old-fashioned values and a very strong work ethic. Whilst Moyes was at Preston North End, he was caught going out to 8-10 games a week. This work ethic helped him take Preston North End up a division and almost up another division if it were not for some unlucky calls in the final.

As Everton manager, even though he wasn’t able to win anything (YIKES), he was still able to build a team that was able to compete with most and managed to get Everton FC into the Champions league with a shoe string budget. For many that don’t realize, that is not an easy thing to do. Also, bringing through players like Wayne Rooney,

Leon Osman, Jack Rodwell, Leighton Baines, Victor Anicheva just to mention a few, this is a trait that not many managers have believe it or not, the only other manager other than Sir Alex that has really been able to blossom true talent is Arsene Wenger.

In short he is the type of manager that will fit in to the Manchester United system. Sir Alex has always said that no one player is bigger than the club and in this case no one manager is bigger than the club either. What I mean is they are bringing in someone who fits the philosophy of the club and not the other way around. Albeit this philosophy was instilled by his predecessor Yes i have highlighted that point for a reason which we will come back too.

Another quality is longevity, Moyes has been at Everton for 11 years now, in a game where managers come and go in one season, this is exactly the kind of manager Manchester United needs, someone who is club loyal, who can build not just for the now, but for the future, and will also build from the ground up. Fortunately for Moyes, that ground work and frame-work already exists, now all he has to do is not screw it up. But I doubt he will, which brings me to my final points.

If Mourinho or Pep Guardiola were to come in, it would be about their philosophy, their system, their way and ultimately about them. Sir Alex Ferguson has resigned his post, but will never leave Manchester United. All that has happened is he has moved upstairs and can enjoy his retirement watching his baby grow under someone else’s stewardship, however, whilst Sir Alex is eating his Prawn sandwiches in the exec box seats (very tasty btw), he will come down from time to time and give the new manager a few words of advice and ensure that the system and philosophy he built will not wilt and will not fade away in to oblivion.

Finally, Moyes was chosen by Sir Alex, this is a guy that hasn’t won anything, so if he does start winning things with Manchester United, will he really get the credit? Or will Sir Alex Ferguson get it? Food for thought my friends. I enjoyed writing this for you and I’ll revisit this story with you in the future just to see if I was spot on. I would love to hear your thoughts too..
